The fact that the art school in Rouen was once a medieval cemetery
interested and inspired the sound and performance artist Ilka Theurich.
Her work "Atemspende" (Breath Donation) is specially designed for this
location. Based on the fact that emotions and thoughts influence
breathing activity and frequency, the sound artist asked various people
to silently reflect on their so-called "last journey" using a
questionnaire. The recorded inhalation and exhalation sounds served as
the material for a sound collage composed in the sound studio, which is
distributed over 15 loudspeakers in the courtyard of the art school,
"donating" breath. The loudspeakers rest sensibly and invisibly in red foot-operated bellows for air mattresses. (Text: Harro Schmidt)

Das die Kunsthochschule in Rouen ein
ehemaliger mittelalterlicher Friedhof war, hat die Klang- und
Performancekünstlerin Ilka Theurich interessiert und inspiriert.
Ihre Arbeit Atemspende ist speziell für diesen Ort
konzipert. Ausgehend von der Tatsache, dass Emotionen und Gedanken
die Atmungsaktivität und -frequenz beeinflussen, hat die
Klangkünstlerin verschiedene Personen gebeten, an Hand eines
Fragebogens ihrere so genannten `letzen Reise' still nachzuspüren.
Die dabei aufgezeichneten Ein- und Ausatmungsgeräusche dienten der
Künstlerin als Material für eine im Tonstudio komponierte
Sound-Collage, die im Innenhof der Kunsthochschule auf 15
Lautsprecher verteilt, Atem spendet. Sinnfällig und unsichtbar ruhen
die Lautsprecher in roten Blasebälgen. (Text: Harro Schmidt)
