Sea of Broken Chains

ist eine ortsspezifische Performance, inspiriert vom revolutionären Lied der Myanmar-Bewegung – ein kraftvolles Manifest von Widerstand, Erinnerung und Hoffnung. Die Aufführung findet in einem Luftschutzbunker in Hannover statt und verwandelt diesen historischen Schutzraum in einen Resonanzraum für kollektives Gedächtnis und ungebrochene Widerstandskraft.

Konzept

Im Zentrum von „Sea of Broken Chains“ steht der universelle Kampf um Freiheit und Menschenwürde. Die Performance greift die Themen des Liedes auf: Opferbereitschaft, Einheit und die Weigerung, Unterdrückung zu vergessen oder zu vergeben. Die „gebrochenen Ketten“ stehen sinnbildlich für den Schmerz verlorener Freiheit und die unerschütterliche Hoffnung auf Befreiung.

Videoprojektion & Bewegung

Während der gesamten Performance wird eine Videoarbeit projiziert, die einen Starenschwarm zeigt, der sich elegant am Herbsthimmel bewegt. Diese Bilder symbolisieren die Kraft kollektiver Bewegung und den Drang nach Freiheit. Im Raum bewege ich mich in weißer Kleidung in einem Konstrukt, das nur noch das Gerippe eines Faltkanus aus Holz zeigt – ein Sinnbild für Zerbrechlichkeit, Erinnerung und das, was bleibt, wenn alles Überflüssige abgelegt ist. Die Bewegungen sind langsam und meditativ, laden das Publikum ein, innezuhalten, zu reflektieren und sich auf die Atmosphäre einzulassen.

Dauer & Ablauf

Die Performance findet an zwei aufeinanderfolgenden Tagen statt, jeweils sechs Stunden lang. Durch die lange Dauer entsteht eine besondere Intensität und Offenheit für individuelle und kollektive Erfahrungen.

Warum ein Luftschutzbunker?

Der Luftschutzbunker als Aufführungsort ist bewusst gewählt: Er steht für Schutz in Zeiten der Gewalt – ähnlich wie die Zufluchtsorte, die Menschen im Widerstand suchen. Hier verschmelzen Vergangenheit und Gegenwart, das Lokale und das Globale, und laden das Publikum ein, die eigene Beziehung zu Freiheit, Angst und Solidarität zu hinterfragen.

Botschaft

„Sea of Broken Chains“ ist mehr als eine Performance – es ist ein Aufruf zur Erinnerung und zum Handeln. Die Arbeit steht in Solidarität mit den Menschen in Myanmar und allen, die gegen Unterdrückung kämpfen. Sie ist eine Hommage an die bedingungslose Liebe zur Heimat, den Mut, für Demokratie einzustehen, und die unzerbrechlichen Bande der Menschlichkeit.

Sea of Broken Chains

is a site-specific performance inspired by the revolutionary song of the Myanmar movement—a powerful manifesto of resistance, remembrance, and hope. The performance takes place in an air-raid shelter in Hannover, transforming this historic place of protection into a resonant space for collective memory and unbroken resilience.

Concept

At the heart of “Sea of Broken Chains” lies the universal struggle for freedom and human dignity. The performance draws on the themes of the song: sacrifice, unity, and the refusal to forget or forgive oppression. The “broken chains” symbolize both the pain of lost liberty and the unwavering hope for liberation.

Video Projection & Movement

Throughout the performance, a video work is projected showing a murmuration of starlings moving elegantly across the autumn sky. These images symbolize the power of collective movement and the longing for freedom. In the space, I move in white clothing within a structure that is nothing more than the wooden skeleton of a folding canoe - a symbol of fragility, memory, and what remains when all that is superfluous has been stripped away. The movements are slow and meditative, inviting the audience to pause, reflect, and immerse themselves in the atmosphere.

Duration & Structure

The performance takes place over two consecutive days, each lasting six hours. The extended duration creates a unique intensity and openness for both individual and collective experiences.

Why an Air-Raid Shelter?

The choice of the air-raid shelter as the venue is deliberate: it represents protection in times of violence - much like the refuges sought by people in resistance. Here, past and present, the local and the global, merge, inviting the audience to reflect on their own relationship to freedom, fear, and solidarity.

Message

“Sea of Broken Chains” is more than a performance - it is a call to remembrance and action. The work stands in solidarity with the people of Myanmar and all those who fight against oppression. It is a tribute to unconditional love for one’s homeland, the courage to stand up for democracy, and the unbreakable bonds of humanity.

ကိုယ်တော်မှိုင်း၊ ရာဇဝင်တွေလည်း ရိုင်းခဲ့ရပြီ အဖိုးရေ Dear Grandpa Ko Daw Hmaing, who fought against colonialism with your pen, our history has been shamefully destroyed by our own Myanmar military.

သခင်အောင်ဆန်း ၊ နိုင်ငံတော်လည်း သွေးစွန်းခဲ့ပြီ အဖရေ Oh, our leader Thakhin Aung San, who fought for our independence, please look down upon us from heaven—our country is now soaked in blood.

ဪ ... လုပ်ရက်ကြပေ What the hell! No mercy, just bullies.

ပေတစ်ရာပေါ်မှာပြည်သူ့အလောင်းတွေ Dead bodies are here and there,

အတုံးအရုံး လဲပြိုကာနေ Helplessly lying on the road

ညီအစ္ကိုတို့ Hey! My brothers, sisters, and friends

ပေတစ်ရာပေါ်မှာစီးတဲ့သွေးတွေမခြောက်သေးဘူး That bloodbath can still be felt.

မတွေဝေနဲ့ And so, don’t confuse it.

ဒီမိုကရေစီ တိုက်ပွဲအတွင်းမှာ ကျရှုံးသော သြော် သူရဲကောင်းတို့လို As the fallen heroes,

ခိုင်မာပီပြင် တော်လှန်ပစ်မလေ Let’s bravely fight again for our democracy.

မျိုးချစ်တဲ့ တို့ဇာနည်တွေ ’Cause we are the ones who unconditionally love our country.

ကမ္ဘာမကြေဘူး We swear, we’ll never forgive what you’ve done.

Additional Information: The Meaning of "kye" in "Kaba Ma Kyay Bu" - U Sarana points out an interesting linguistic distinction: the word "kye" in the song title "Kaba Ma Kyay Bu" is not the same as the "kyay" in Myanmar’s national anthem. In the national anthem, "kaba ma kyay" is written with a soft "y" and means "the world is not broken"- that is, as long as the world exists, there will always be people in Myanmar. In contrast, the protest song against the military uses a different "kyay": here, it stands for a hard "y," which is actually pronounced more like an "r," and means "to repay" or "to return." The phrase "kaba ma kyay bu" expresses that the wrongs committed by the military are so grave that they cannot be repaid—not even through suffering in hell, and not even after an entire aeon (kappa, the lifespan of a world). This subtle but significant linguistic nuance gives the protest song a deeper, more powerful message.
